SKILLS
PURPOSE
Build read-react hockey skills through a small area compete game.
FOCUS
- Reacting to variability
- Keeping the feet moving to gain possession and utilize space
- Generating a scoring change quickly off possession
- Making your opponent have to work harder
HOW TO
This game can be played with one net as well in half or quarter ice area.
- One tire in the middle of the play area, and two teams fairly close together with pucks.
- Recommend a full size tire, but can use rebounder or smaller tires. Anything that will create a weird or unpredictable bounce is recommended.
- Designate one team to start as the “hunters” and the other as the “gatherers.”
- The first person in the hunter line shoots the puck at the tire, causing a semi-unpredictable bounce
- The puck is now in play. The gatherer can go immediately to the puck but the hunter must go around the tire first to join the play. Both players have to go get the puck with the intention that the gatherer will “gather” the puck first and the “hunters” will have to hunt them down to take it from them.
- Both teams are trying to score on their designated nets.
EXTEND
- Have hunters only play a defensive role and must move the puck out of the zone or to a coach instead of score
- Play 2v2, 3v3 or add some sort of release or other progressive element to it.
- Change the size of the play area
