SKILLS
PURPOSE
This simple warm-up drill is great for getting goalies to move left and right, stretching their reads in the zone with predictable, controlled shots. For the skaters, this is a quick passing and lane read drill.
FOCUS
Goalies:
- Setting up for the shot with good SAD
- Making controlled saves
Players:
- Good, quick tape to tape passing
- Getting open and driving lanes
- Shots on net
HOW TO
- Set up with four (4) lines, all with pucks, roughly halfway between the tops of the circles (1 & 2) and then just at or outside the blue line (3 & 4).
- To start, player 1 passes across to 2, steps out into the flat and receives a puck back. 1 drives the outside lane and shoots between the top of the circles and the face off dot. DO NOT GO TO THE NET OR CUT TO THE CENTER LANE!
- As soon as player 2 passes out to 1 in the flat, they pass down to 1. Drive the center lane and get a pass back from 1. 2 shoots near the top of the circles. DO NOT GO TO THE NET.
- Drill now repeats from the other side with 3 passing across to 4, stepping into the flat, receiving the pass and driving the outside lane for a shot between the top of the circles and the face off dot. DO NOT GO TO THE NET OR CUT TO THE CENTER LANE!
- Now 4 goes, passing down to 3, driving the inside lane, receiving a pass back, and shoots near the top of the circles. DO NOT GO TO THE NET.
EXTEND
- Instead of both lanes shooting, designate one set (1 & 3 or 2 &4) and defenders having to back check.
- Have each proceeding person stay in front of the net for a screen tip or rebound.
