Zone Defense Passing Game
PURPOSE
Work on passing through traffic and creating space.
HOW TO
- Split into three teams and split the zone into three areas.
- In one third, place 4 players in each end zone (teams A and B). Place 2 players in the center zone and one in each end zone (team C).
- Coach puts puck into an end zone. For this example, with team A. Team A must pass the puck 4 times consecutively amongst themselves, with player C playing defense.
- Once team A makes 4 passes, they have to successfully pass to a player on Team B, who then begins the same 4 pass play on their half.
- If Team C gains control in either end zone, they have to make a pass to their team in the middle zone to change or if they gain possession in the middle zone by intercepting the pass, they get to change places with the infracting team.
- EG: Team A makes 4 passes and attempts to pass to team B. Player C in the middle intercepts the pass. Play stops. Team C takes over the end zone where team A was and team A splits to two in the middle and one in each end zone.
- EG: Team A makes 4 passes and successfully passes to a player on team B. After two passes, team B’s pass is broken up by team C and they make a pass to their own player in the middle zone. Play stops. Team C takes over the end zone where team B was and team B splits to two in the middle and one in each end zone.
