SKILLS
PURPOSE
Work on basic quick passing, progressing to the addition of skating elements to build proficiency in motion.
FOCUS
- Passing form and function
- Giving a target, finding the target, and delivering tape to tape
- Soft reception and quick release
HOW TO
PROGRESSION 1
- Four players – one with a puck (1), the others (2, 3, 4) 6-10 feet away (or as needed for age and skill level), 3-4 feet apart in a spray.
- Player 1 passes to player 2 and receives back, then 1 repeats to players 3 & 4.
- Player 1 then reverses, passing again to player 4, to 3, and last to 2.
- Now, player 1 takes player 2’s spot and player 1 is the primary passer. Continue till all 4 players have been the primary passer.
PROGRESSION 2
- Set up like progression 1, but add a cone or marker for player 1.
- Player 1 skates to one side of the cone, passes to player 2, receives the puck back.
- After receiving the puck, the skate around the cone and now pass to player 3.
- They receive the puck back and turn around the cone to pass to player 4.
- Like above, they repeat the process starting at player 4.
PROGRESSION 3
- Set up like above, but now have two cones.
- Player 1 starts the drill between the two cones and taking a few strides forward, passing to player 2. They will transition open to receive the puck back.
- Now with the puck they transition back to forward around the cone and now pass to player 3. They transition, receive the puck back, and transition again around the other cone.
- Passing a 3rd time to player 4, transition around the first cone, receive back and go back to forward.
- Drill repeats starting with player 4 again.
EXTEND
- Require a certain type of transition like a mohawk or have to turn to/away from the cone
- Certain type of pass like only forehand or backhand or saucer passes
- Add obstacles that they have to pass over or through
- Adjust distance or spacing
