SKILLS
PURPOSE
Working on building and maintaining speed with puck control through a variety of maneuvers.
FOCUS
- Using edges and crossovers to maintain and/or gain speed.
- Getting open to pucks and escaping as needed
- Moves around defenders – dekes and protections
HOW TO
- Player in line with tops of circles with coach and pucks. Rebounder set up on an angle in high slot, two stick handlers near each board, two cones off-set on one side and two cones at off-sides face off dots, per diagram.
- Player puts puck off rebounder, gathers and takes a shot.
- Player needs to shoot as quickly as possible. Avoid skating with puck at the net.
- After shot, player takes a few strides and opens up to the coach. They receive and return a quick pass.
- Player then escapes and goes around the net.
- On the far side, they receive another pass from the coach.
- Player carries the puck wide around stick handler, weaves the next two cones, then goes around the top two cones, and breaks into the zone wide.
- They make a move on the second stick handler, then take a quick shot on net.
EXTEND
- Instead of the coach passing, let the next player in line be the passer.
- Instead of a rebounder device, have a player make that give & go.
- Have a player become a defender at any given point that seems right for the skill level of the team.
