PURPOSE
In this drill progression, players learn concepts related to net front presence and utilizing the low space behind the net to create scoring chances out front.
FOCUS
Passing and puck movement for possession and space management.
HOW TO
PROGRESSION 1
- One line of players off to the side of the net with pucks (1), one player in front of the net (2).
- Player 1 starts to skate like they are going behind the net. Player 2 times it, skating to the low spot on the opposite side of the net. 2 calls for the puck “low” or “behind”.
- 1 passes to player 2 and vacates to the front of the net (they DO NOT go behind the net).
- Player 2 releases on the SAME side and passes to player 1 in front for a quick shot.
PROGRESSION 2
- One line of players off to the side of the net with pucks (1), one player in front of the net (2).
- Player 1 starts to skate like they are going behind the net. Player 2 times it, skating to the low spot on the opposite side of the net. 2 calls for the puck “low” or “behind”.
- 1 passes to player 2 and vacates to the front of the net (they DO NOT go behind the net).
- Player 2 carries BEHIND the net and curls to pass to player 1 for a quick shot on net.
PROGRESSION 3
- One line of players off to the side of the net with pucks (1), one player in front of the net (2).
- Player 1 skates behind the net. Player 2 times it, calls for a “cycle”.
- 1 bumps puck behind and off the boards for player 2.
- Player 1 continues to the front of the net. Player 2 releases on the SAME side and passes to player 1 in front for a quick shot.
PROGRESSION 4
- One line of players off to the side of the net with pucks (1), one player in front of the net (2).
- Player 1 skates behind the net. Player 2 times it, calls for a “cycle”.
- 1 bumps puck behind and off the boards for player 2.
- Player 1 continues to the front of the net. Player 2 carries behind the net, maintaining good gap with player 1.
- Player 2 passes to player 1 in front for a quick shot.
