SKILLS
PURPOSE
The purpose of this drill to work on escaping up the board and generating wall support to exploit the mid-slot seam for a quick shot and quality scoring opportunity.
FOCUS
- Quick, accurate passing in motion
- Escaping pressure
- Shooting quickly from an adjusted shooting angle
- For goalies, it’s tracking through the pass cycle – low to high, high to mid, then to the mid-backside read.
HOW TO
HALF ICE VERSION
- Line of players in the corner, set of cones (4-6) high in the zone, and either a net, boarder patrol, or line of cones in the slot.
- Net works well as a partial screen for goalies, but any boundary marker is acceptable
- First player skates backwards through mid-lane on an angle between top cones and slot boundary.
- When they are about half way, player 2 will pass them the puck.
- Player 1 turns and skates forwards, with puck, around top cones.
- As they break back toward the corner, they will pass back down to player 2.
- Player 1 will break toward the slot area behind the boundary while player 2 drive up the boards.
- Player 2 passes to player 1 in the slot, who takes a couple steps to get around/beyond the boundary for a shot.
- Player 1 should NOT drive to the net.
- Player 1 gets in line, player 2 now becomes player 1.
EXTEND
- Add defenders in a progressive manner to better simulate game situations
- Have player release to become a backchecking defender
- Add a pass from the coach to player 2 for a second shot
